Letters from our children

We are always delighted to receive handwritten letters and drawings from the children we sponsor in Cambodia. Here are letters from two of them.

Letter from Sinet

Sinet, the 14-year-old girl we sponsor in the Kampong Thom children's home, wrote us a holiday greeting:

Happy Merry Christmas!
Hello, I am Sinet. How are you? I really want to see you one time. I am so happy to live in this orphanage because here I have a lot of friends. I have fun with them. I have new clothes, which I never got before. I am very thankful for you sponsoring me every month. I love you so much!

Letter from Soklang

Soklang, the 8-year-old boy we sponsor in the Kampong Cham children's home, wrote us:

Dear Sponsor,
Hello! How are you? For me, I am good. How is the weather there? In Cambodia it is hot. My living here is so good, and I have a lot of friends. This year I am studying in grade 2. My living here is so fresh because I help grow trees and flowers around my house.

I am so thankful for everything that you always support me. When Christmas day comes, I hope you have happiness with your family and other people near you. I wish you are healthy and God bless you.

Kampong Thom Children's Home: gone swimming

After the school break, the house parents of the Kampong Thom Children's Home brought all the children to play at the swimming pool. All of the children were so excited. It was a really nice time for them to get refreshed after the school break.

We support the three Kov siblings at this children's home. Sinet, the sister, was especially excited about the pool trip. She really likes swimming.

Kampong Cham Children's Home: Got Milk

On September 11, 2019, the Royal Academy of Cambodia distributed fresh milk to the children at the Kampong Cham Children's Home. This is one of the health benefits for our sponsored children. Soklang, the child we support at this children's home, was so excited to receive the milk.

Sometimes , what they want the most isn’t “material” things that we provide, but it is our ears that they need the most.

On Saturday, July 13th, 2019, a group of ten volunteers distributed supplies to nine homeless people. We provided canned food, women’s hygiene products, coffee, duct tape, exacto blades, batteries, water, ziplock bags, garbage bags, soap, chapstick, toothbrushes, matches, bandaids, reading glasses, toilet paper, and shaving cream.

Beyond the Basic necessities

Normally, we always try to provide the basic needs for everyone, but to be honest, it is not enough. Think about it—who lives just off basic necessities?

We always try to think what other things do they need besides just food and hygiene products. We are always constantly asking questions about the things that they gather and need. What we have come to find out is that people who are homeless tend to salvage a lot of things and need items to repair things—things like duct tape, exacto blades, and super glue go a long way for people who tend to make use of things we deem as “junk.”

We always try to ask what they do throughout the day, and then try to tailor our shopping habits to what they need. I know these items will not change their situation, but it’s good to know that something so little can maybe just change the mood in a positive way for someone who is going through so much.

Coffee leads to church invitation

Awhile ago we started bringing coffee, and once we introduced that item to the mix, we saw so many peoples' faces light up. We love to hear the excitement in their voice when they say things like “Wow, we never see anyone bring these kinds of things, it is usually just food!” or “I’ve been needing this for so long!”

In the picture below is what we’ve included in each “goodie bag.” Since we found out coffee has been such a huge success, we use it as an opportunity to invite people to ECHO Church for free coffee and to listen to the message.

Jason's story

Hello everyone, this here is Jason, and we got the chance to talk to him for a couple of hours and hear his story.

Jason is a mechanic and has been working on cars since he was 16 years old. Unfortunately for Jason, he is unemployed right now and has been looking for work. He was incarcerated for awhile and has not been able to find work.

This is sad, because how can we ever expect people to try and get their life together when there are no opportunities? People complain about crime, but what is society doing to allow ex-cons to become contributing members of society?

What I’ve learned is that prison doesn’t end when your sentence ends, it follows you even after you leave. Our prison system is overcrowded, and is only going to get worse unless we find a way to allow people who have been incarcerated to have a new life.

We ended up talking to Jason for a couple of hours asking about his personal life. At one point, I had to apologize because I felt like I was asking about too many personal things. Jason stopped me and said “No, its ok, it feels good to have someone to talk to, even if it is a stranger.”

We can always talk about the physical things that people need, but an even greater need is the emotional need to connect with someone who cares. Sometimes , what they want the most isn’t “material” things that we provide, but it is our ears that they need the most.

Americans Visit Children's Home

Stephen Slaughter came with two of his friends from the USA to visit the children at the Kampong Thom home in Cambodia for the second time. The last time he came was with Norway Church on a team led by Tina from SEAPC.

Sinet enjoyed swimming at the pool and picking out a new outfit when the American team visited.

Toys, Food, Clothes, and Swimming

Stephen brought three packs of toys from the States for the kids. He took the children to buy clothing, one new outfit for each child. He threw a lunch party for the children at the home, and he also took them to the swimming pool in the evening. For dinner he took the children out for dinner at The Third Place restaurant.

All the kids were so happy, and Sinet enjoyed herself and had a lot of fun with the team. Here are some photos and a video showing the activities of the kids while the team was visiting the children's home.

On June 1, 2109, our team of eight volunteers distributed clothes, food, dog food, socks, band-aids, hand wipes, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, soap, toothbrushes, and batteries to eight homeless people.

Batteries, Hand wipes, and more

This outreach, we provided some of the same basic necessities that are usually needed. The most popular item was AA and AAA batteries. The homeless people usually run out of batteries the fastest because they use them to listen to the radio or other electronic devices.

Another popular item was the hand wipes. It’s hard for individuals living near the creeks to keep up with sanitation. Hand wipes are a convenient item to have when there is no clean water available to them. We definitely take having bathrooms for granted, and it is sobering when you realize that the simple things we take for granted really help maintain our well-being.

We have had requests to provide things like a portable butane stove and duct tape. We will do our best to supply the needs of the less fortunate.

Mama Fae

In this outreach, we decided to visit “Mama Fae.” Mama Fae has been around the homeless encampments for a long time, and everyone knows her. For someone about 70 years old and disabled from the waist down, she is the most energetic and fierce women you will ever run into. She always has a positive outlook on life and believes in Jesus Christ. She will definitely preach the gospel to anybody on any given day. She does not blame God for her circumstances but believes everything is for a reason.
