Message from Pastor David

Every once in awhile I come across a real servant of the Lord at SLM who just completely understands community. Riley is that young man – he understands our folks. He is one of those guys who is quiet and serves and spends time sitting with our folks. He strikes up a conversation and then the Lord just starts to work on their hearts in the midst of the conversation. I was heartbroken when I heard Riley was leaving us to go to another country. Please read the Volunteer Corner for what he told me.

Volunteer Corner: Riley

​I discovered Street Life when I was looking for a way to live out Jesus' calling to care for the homeless and poor. I never considered my own faith would be radically changed. As I befriended people at Street Life, I listened to somber stories of misfortune and downturns that led people to the streets. But instead of living in despair or depression, I found many living in hope with an enthusiastic zeal for the Lord. Instead of assigning blame to someone or something for their situation, they praised God for all they had in life. 

Through their faithful obedience, I observed God working directly in their lives... someone completing nurse assistant school and finding work caring for an elderly woman, another finally finding his own place to live, and another being called by God back to work with a deeper purpose. These transformations demonstrated the reality of God's blessing on the poor and forced me to realize how the clutter of material things in my own life can distract my heart from God. These experiences have completely changed my view on homelessness, and I invite all those looking for true faith to come to Street Life. I have no doubt that if Jesus were physically here today; he would be with those at Street Life.
