Letters from our children

We are always delighted to receive handwritten letters and drawings from the children we sponsor in Cambodia. Here are letters from two of them.

Letter from Sinet

Sinet, the 14-year-old girl we sponsor in the Kampong Thom children's home, wrote us a holiday greeting:

Happy Merry Christmas!
Hello, I am Sinet. How are you? I really want to see you one time. I am so happy to live in this orphanage because here I have a lot of friends. I have fun with them. I have new clothes, which I never got before. I am very thankful for you sponsoring me every month. I love you so much!

Kampong Thom Children's Home: gone swimming

After the school break, the house parents of the Kampong Thom Children's Home brought all the children to play at the swimming pool. All of the children were so excited. It was a really nice time for them to get refreshed after the school break.

We support the three Kov siblings at this children's home. Sinet, the sister, was especially excited about the pool trip. She really likes swimming.

Americans Visit Children's Home

Stephen Slaughter came with two of his friends from the USA to visit the children at the Kampong Thom home in Cambodia for the second time. The last time he came was with Norway Church on a team led by Tina from SEAPC.

Pool and Pizza

Some volunteers came to visit Soklang (one of the children we sponsor) and the other kids at the Kampong Cham children's home. The volunteers spent time with the kids eating pizza, chicken, and other nice foods. They took all the kids on outings, such as to the swimming pool. Soklang was so excited.

Khmer New Year

Khmer New Year is the biggest holiday of the year in Cambodia.

Sinet Kov, one of the children we sponsor in Cambodia, enjoys ice cream.
During Khmer New Year, most people travel to their home towns to celebrate with family and friends. Schools are closed for at least two weeks. If it is safe for a child in a children's home to visit family, they go and visit them during this time. It helps to maintain relationships between the children and any family they have and gives them the opportunity to share Jesus with those family members as well. For those who either do not have any known family or for whom it would not be safe, they stay at the children’s home and celebrate there.

When the children visit family, there is always the risk that they will not return. With so many children visiting families each April for the holiday, we always wonder how many will not return. Of course, we want the children to be with family who loves them and can support them, but if the situation would not be good for the child to stay there, we prefer for the child to return to the children’s home. We are happy to hear so far that only two children have not returned. Praise God! We pray this continues as we wait to hear from all of the homes.

Hot, Rainy season

Cambodia is entering its hottest time of the year and the start of the rainy season. For the next couple of months, temperatures can get well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. As the rainy season begins soon, it can also be a time of flooding. Pray with us for the protection of our children’s homes.

Khmer New Year Holiday

April also brings the Khmer New Year holiday season. This is the biggest holiday in the country and can last up to 2 weeks. Because it is best for the kids to keep them in contact with any known family, unless it puts them in physical danger, and the government requires that we allow children to go, many of the kids travel to visit family during this time, usually for up to 1 week.

Please pray with us that the kids who visit family will be the bright light of Jesus to their families and that they will all return safely to the home. For those who are unable to visit families, please pray that they are abundantly blessed during the holiday time.

In 2018, we continued our sponsorship of Soklang Vun (7), Sinet Kov (13), Sopheary Kov (13), and Sopheak Kov (15). Soklang is at the Kampong Cham children's home, and the Kovs are at the Kampong Thom home.

Happy 13th birthday, Sinet and Sopheary!

Update on Kov Siblings

I pray that you are doing well. I’m not sure if you realize it or not, but the 3 siblings sponsored by Agape Fish, Sopheak, Sinet and Sopheary Kov, are all a bit mentally challenged, in varying degrees. I did not learn that until I went to Cambodia. It was not on their original data, which is possibly because they were not aware of it yet at the homes.

I have just received the scores that all three received at the end of finishing first grade. Sinet (the sister) passed—barely, and both boys unfortunately failed and will repeat the grade. Sopheak (the oldest boy) is the one with the most disability as far as learning is concerned, but he is very good with his hands and doing hands-on things. He enjoys it very much also. We are thinking of gearing him toward a future in this path.
