This activity was a super fun way to learn about planes and spend time developing relationships with each other. Many thanks to Jack, Jason, Lotta, and Sierra for coming with us.
A notable quote from Kevin: "The museum just has the outdoor airplane for the 'likes.'" Khmer New YearDuring Khmer New Year, most people travel to their home towns to celebrate with family and friends. Schools are closed for at least two weeks. If it is safe for a child in a children's home to visit family, they go and visit them during this time. It helps to maintain relationships between the children and any family they have and gives them the opportunity to share Jesus with those family members as well. For those who either do not have any known family or for whom it would not be safe, they stay at the children’s home and celebrate there.
When the children visit family, there is always the risk that they will not return. With so many children visiting families each April for the holiday, we always wonder how many will not return. Of course, we want the children to be with family who loves them and can support them, but if the situation would not be good for the child to stay there, we prefer for the child to return to the children’s home. We are happy to hear so far that only two children have not returned. Praise God! We pray this continues as we wait to hear from all of the homes. Hot, Rainy seasonCambodia is entering its hottest time of the year and the start of the rainy season. For the next couple of months, temperatures can get well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. As the rainy season begins soon, it can also be a time of flooding. Pray with us for the protection of our children’s homes. Khmer New Year HolidayApril also brings the Khmer New Year holiday season. This is the biggest holiday in the country and can last up to 2 weeks. Because it is best for the kids to keep them in contact with any known family, unless it puts them in physical danger, and the government requires that we allow children to go, many of the kids travel to visit family during this time, usually for up to 1 week.
Please pray with us that the kids who visit family will be the bright light of Jesus to their families and that they will all return safely to the home. For those who are unable to visit families, please pray that they are abundantly blessed during the holiday time. This was our first time back since last year, and we got to reconnect with a lot of the same people we helped previously.
It was good reconnecting with people we haven't seen in a while, and we got to catch up with each other. It was a satisfying experience due to the fact that we have established real relationships with these people and were able to catch up like old friends. We told them that we were going to be out more consistently and jotted down any items that they might need. We are also teaming up with another church called Christian Worship Center, as we have done before in the past, so things have been picked up where we left off. Agape Fish Fund partners with Pastor Charlie and Mary to provide basic necessities and Christian care for exploited migrant workers in Taiwan. Letter from Pastor CharlieDear family and friends,
In God’s grace, our family returned to Taiwan. The children have gone back to school and seen classmates that they hadn’t seen for a long time. We were concerned about how they would catch up with their friends in terms of academics and the school’s atmosphere. To our surprise, we are proud that our young ones have been adjusting fine and are happy. Praise God for the relief in our heart! A number of ladies have become Christians. Subsequently, we’ve been teaching basic lessons of faith in preparation for baptism at Easter. Furthermore, a few others have diligently witnessed to their families. God has used their testimonies to touch the hearts of their loved ones. It’s exciting news! Thank you for partnering in prayers and support. Find out how we're helping children in Cambodia and Thailand. Thanks to your support, we're providing these four orphans in Cambodia with a Christian home, nourishing food, and education. Bikes for Our childrenAgape Fish Fund partners with O'Keefe to provide tutoring and Christian mentorship to low-income students in East Palo Alto, California. Celebrating 20 YearsWe are so grateful for everyone who has been serving by tutoring, mentoring, and discipling through the low-income tutoring ministry over the years. Last year, 2018, marked the 20th anniversary of when the first group of volunteers moved into different apartments (355 and 360) on O'Keefe Street back in 1998 and started hanging out with the kids.
There have been so many changes over the past 20 years, but God has remained faithful through it all. We are so grateful that he continues to draw people to the neighborhood and the tutoring program. We are praying for all of the volunteers and the families they touch! |
